The Spey River originates from Meall Clach a Cheannaiche in Lochaber and the first loch is loch spey. From here it passes drummin and in to the national park at the spey dam reservoir at Laggan. It then flows down the valley to Newtonmore where it is joined by the river truim as it heads to loch insh. It carries on to aviemore and Grantown on spey as it passes through the park. By the time it is past Cromdale it has swelled to become a major river
