The Hugh Fraser Dragoons re-enactment staged Weekend of 24/10/09 in the environment of our township and pinewoods at The Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore. Parade, Musket, Skirmish and Cannon Display.
It is Autumn 1644 and the Marquis of Montrose’s army is passing through Badenoch, recruiting and skirmishing with the local covenanters.

Music and step dancing
This session gives visitors an opportunity to find out more about the music of the Highlands and traditional dances like step dancing, with an opportunity to participate in basic steps. The body posture of the dancer is with the emphasis on movement from the knees down while the upper There are solo dances and group dances, all of which involve a variety of steps and formations, and depending on where the dances are performed, there are countless variations.

Waulking the Cloth
This session gives visitors a chance to learn more about waulking the cloth, ask questions and also participate in the process. Waulking songs (Scots Gaelic: Orain Luaidh) are traditionally sung by women while waulking the cloth. This practice involved a group of ladies sitting around a table and beating newly woven tweed rhythmically against the table.

The purpose was to shrink the tweed and also get rid of oils, dirt, and other impurities. Simple, beat-driven Gaelic songs were used to pass the time and create the rhythm to accompany the work.

Knockbain School from Kirkhill Parish near Inverness
was first built in 1925. 
Once called the ‘Green Hut’, the building was relocated to the Highland Folk Museum in 1999.  With its 40 desk classroom, visitors of all ages can experience school life from the late 1930s including writing on a slate or with a dip pen; to perhaps being threatened with the strap!
