 World Porridge Championship 2008

World Porridge Championship Porridge 3-1aThe 15th annual championship was held on Sunday 12 Oct 2008 there was 15 competitors for the tile. For more information use the link to the golden Spurtle website.

The judges for this year was Tom Lewis from the Monachyle Mhor Hotel and George McIvor , Colin Bussey of the Master chefs of Great Britain. This years winner from the Slochd near carrbridge of the Golden Spurtle was Ian Bishop. Ian has-been trying for a number of year to win the title and succeeded this year.
and for the Speciality porridge was Addy Daggert.

THE WORLD PORRIDGE MAKING CHAMPIONSHIP
Carrbridge Highlands of Scotland The annual World Porridge Making Championships is followed with interest by connoisseurs of the traditional national dish across the globe. The event, held in the small Scottish Highland village of Carrbridge, attracts an international line up of professional chefs and amateur porridge makers from far and wide all keen to prove they can make a perfect bowl of porridge and are worthy of claiming the world championship title and prestigious Golden Spurtle trophy. As well as the traditional porridge, contenders are also invited to enter the speciality section in which porridge is
combined with other ingredients with marks given for taste, consistency and creative presentation. The action packed programme includes a pipe band parade of judges and competitors, the  official "Toast to the Porridge", food stalls, product tasting, cookery demonstrations and live music. Other events during the day also include the annual Carrbridge Challenge 5km and 3km Forest Run and a minis' fun run with fund raising for Maggie's Highlands. Recipe plain porridge base
1 cup oatmeal, 3 equal cups of water, 1 cup milk semi skimmed , knob of butter 1/2 oz , pinch of salt 1/2 teasp.
Chocolate Surprise
add to base: 1 heaped tablespoon dark liquid chocolate (macphie carton), summer fruits (carton), apples sliced cooked, 1tbsp sugar, Aerosol cream, Dark chocolate bar grated on top.

Method: add to pan oatmeal, water, and milk stirring all the time. Bring to the boil, add butter and salt keep stirring, stir until thickens, add chocolate mix well, leave to stand to cool, add to dessert dish, put in 1 tablespoon of fruit, add cream and dark chocolate on top. sound file>  Click here for a Interview with Lynn on Porridge

Recipe plain porridge base
2 Cup Hamlyn's Medium Oatmeal
4 Cup Water , pinch Salt
Speciality: base porridge as above: 1 Tbsp Ginger, 1 Tbsp Cinnamon, 1 Tbsp Vanilla essence,  3 Tbsp Currants or Raisins, 2 Tbsp Whole Hazelnuts. For the Cream: 1/2 Pint Double Cream, 2 Tbsp of Heather Honey, sum 10year old Speyside malt for a Lift.

Addy Daggert is a professional chef he currently works for Glenfiddich distillery. The Dutchman has lived in Scotland for a number of year and loves the country. He was the winner of the speciality section in 2006 and again this year. Anne Batchelor visited the championship last year and decided to have a go at the title.
She has spent the last, year, practising her porridge making and was reworded with a place in the final on her first attempt.
